What Is the Abundant Life?

The Bible says Jesus Christ came that we might live the abundant life.  What is the abundant life?

Is a life of health and wealth what Jesus Christ referred to when He said “that you might have life more abundantly?”

What does the Bible say?

There are those who consider King Solomon as having been the richest man of his time. If not of all time.

Solomon enjoyed God’s blessings of a lavish lifestyle. He had an annual income equivalent to about 2 billion dollars in today’s money.

He was respected and honored by the nations around him.

There was peace and safety throughout his kingdom.

Solomon had it all.

He lived a life of unparalleled luxury, leisure, fame and recognition that his accumulated wealth provided him.

He denied himself not a single thing.

He could have whatever he wanted when he wanted it.

Surely, Solomon must have lived the abundant life.

But did he?

Here’s the richest man of his time.  The wisest man who ever lived.

And yet, he said “I HATED LIFE.”

Does this mean God doesn’t want us to be prosperous and successful?

Of course not. He doesn’t want to see us struggling.  Barely able to make ends meet.

Many of the great men of the Bible were wealthy.

Abraham was wealthy.

His great-grandson Joseph — Jacob’s  son — rose to power in Egypt.

Second only to Pharaoh.

Job was a very prominent builder, and he was the wealthiest man in the east.

The apostles Peter and Andrew, together with James and John, they had a lucrative fishing business.

God wants us to understand that there’s more to TRUE abundant living than just being healthy, wealthy and wise.

Jesus Christ Himself said that the abundant life — REAL life, REAL living — does not consist in the abundance of one’s material possessions (Luke 12:15).

The Bible tells us that REAL abundant living involves cultivating a close, personal relationship with Almighty God, the Source of all good things.

REAL abundant living means we put God at the very center of our lives.

That requires MORE than just giving your heart to the Lord.

More than merely ACCEPTING Christ as your savior.

It involves more than believing IN God.

Having a personal bond with God requires BELIEVING Him.  Obeying Him.  Doing what He says. Keeping His commandments.

God warns us that the love of money is A root — not THE root — of all evil.

When the pursuit of wealth and the accumulation of material goods becomes the idol on which man trusts and relies.

God wants us to acknowledge He knows best.

That we can rely on Him, trust Him to give us what will produce our happiness and our well-being.

But He does forbid those things that are bad for us.

Those things that will bring unhappiness, lead to a life of gloom and emptiness.

God promises He will supply ALL our needs, IF we obey Him.

And He will even give us luxuries we want, if it’s for our good and He knows we will use it properly.

Most of all, He promises to bestow upon us an inheritance far greater, filled with far more splendor and glory, real happiness, true prosperity and lasting success than you can ever imagine . . . IF you will surrender your life to Him!

That is the true, abundant life.

A sparkling life brimful and overflowing with joy, hope, satisfaction and meaning NOW and FOREVER!
