What Do You Mean "Amen"?

The word "Amen" may well be the most universal word on earth.
It is found in almost every language known to mankind.

The Constant Church of God presents clear answers to your questions, directly from the Bible!

Why do billions of people use the word AMEN at the end of their prayers?

Is AMEN some secret password assuring your prayers will be heard?

Is it a magic word that promises an answer?

In the Old Testament, the Bible says the word AMEN, means “verily” and “truly.”

In the New Testament, AMEN means "of a truth," "most assuredly,” and "so let it be."

When Jesus Christ taught His disciples how to pray, He gave them a model outline for prayer.   Commonly known as the Lord’s prayer.

And in that prayer outline, He teaches us to end our prayer with AMEN.

So when we say AMEN, we are asking God to please let this be so or please allow this to happen.

But the use of AMEN goes back even prior to that time.

In the Old Testament, in the book of Deuteronomy, Moses instructed the Levites to speak and proclaim in a loud voice the curses that would befall Israel if they sinned.  And after each proclamation, the people were commanded to say “AMEN."

By saying "AMEN" the Israelites agreed with what the Levites had proclaimed.
In effect, they said, WE AGREE,  SO BE IT.
AMEN!

When people say AMEN at church services, or praying for the blessing on the meal or gathered at some public assembly, they are expressing agreement with what was said.
Even though they never uttered the words themselves, by saying AMEN to someone’s prayer…. It is as if it became their very own prayer.

In the book of Revelation, Jesus Christ was called The AMEN the One who speaks truly.
Who means what He says.  Jesus Christ is faithful, loyal, and dependable.

When we end our prayers with AMEN, we are telling God that our prayers have been faithfully and loyally offered up to Him.

AMEN therefore represents our final reaffirmation.

That we meant all that we prayed and truly take it seriously.

We are also saying that we fully believe God has heard that prayer and will answer it.

Yes,  AMEN is truly one little word that has great meaning.
